EFL Classroom 2.0

I created EFL Classroom 2.0 in the summer of 2007. It now has over twenty thousand members (despite being a private site) and is the world’s premium social networking site for English Language Teachers.

It highlights my own personal passion and dedication. I firmly believe in the power of technology to both aid 2nd language acquisition but more importantly, help teachers develop professionally and make the world a more tolerant, smaller, better place.

Teaching Recipes

Teaching Recipes I created along with Dmitry Volokov (who designed the site). It is a place where teachers can share brief “teaching recipes”. A very simple concept that has proved helpful to thousands of new or even experienced teachers. It truly shows the power of Web 2.0 and how the internet allows us to share our knowledge, to the benefit of our students!

I have trained thousands of teachers both online and in class, in the use of educational technology. Practical training in creating materials and using online tools. ELT and TECH is a wiki that all teachers who attend my workshops can visit and find tutorials to support their learning.

I have written numerous articles ranging from co-teaching to disabilities in the classroom.

Presently, my efforts are “disruptive” and I am trying a new self- publishing model of both creating, marketing and selling ELT materials I’ve created. See my store with textbooks on offer. Central to this is my textbook - We Teach | We Learn. A student created content course book with a new methodology for English language teaching.

The School of TEFL

The School of TEFL is a community of teachers focused on teacher training and TEFL teaching fundamentals. It is the main community for my forthcoming School of TEFL where a fully certified TEFL 150 hour certificate and other professional development courses will be offered.

TEFList is a website I created to solve a major problem in English Language Teaching. There were so many jobs and such a “come and go” of new teachers in our business – however no place that:

1. Aggregated and used the power of RSS to bring jobs to one searchable place

2. No job website harnessing the power of the internet to use video resumes and make for better communication between teachers – employers.

Thus, TEFList. A site created by teachers for teachers. It will remain on the cutting edge of internet technology – harnessing that power to make life easier for both employers and teachers around the world.

ELT Random Blog Generator

I have an earnest interest in promoting community among the ELT community and developed the Random ELT Blog Generator as part of that.

It is on many blogs throughout the ELT blogging community and when a reader clicks on it, it will bring them to a random English language teaching related blog. One weakness of the internet as it has developed is that it has enabled us to get too good at only seeing the information that we think interests us. However, great learning, has an element of serendipity and “width”. My random blog generator helps in this regard.

Chatterbots

I have developed many online applications that allow students to practice English online with “bots”, computer animated figures that respond back in real time, just like a person (well almost).

First and foremost is Alice that I added drop boxes to so that students who had difficulty in typing, could chat without difficulty.

The English Tutor speaks sentences which the student must write out (like dictation). She will then check them and tell you if they are right.

I’ve done a lot in the area of how applications for the learning disabled can be used by English language teachers – it remains a passion.

Video / Audio Design

I’m an ardent believer in learning language through audio/video applications.

My own work is a testament to this belief.

English Central, the web’s premium online language learning platform where I am a key educational consultant.

The Random Ted Talks player that thousands of teachers use for professional development (and to get some serendipity into their learning.

The Ad free and searchable Youtube play I designed to help teachers use youtube in class without a lot of ads and “noise”.

The dozens of players of content on EFL Classroom 2.0, especially the A/V player of streamed resources for ELT. Also, notable, the collection of NFB videos for use in the classroom and my list of top 100 youtube videos for language teaching.

I’ve also created and worked with the open source code of Big Blue Button to make educational video-conferencing rooms.
